Poetry: The Amazing Rest of the Story

Event date: 4/26/2025 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM Export event

April is national poetry month.

On Saturday, April 26th, at 3:30 p.m., talented storyteller, Darrel Draper, will be at the Bellevue Library to present his utterly fascinating stories of the lives of two of America's most famous poets, Emily Dickenson and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. These stories are guaranteed to make some of you blush, some of you shed a tear, and all of you will laugh.

The format of these stories follows the tradition of the late broadcaster and entertainer, Paul Harvey, and his "Rest of the Story" programs that provided audiences surprising and almost unbelievable insights into historical figures and events for decades.

Topics will include why Emily Dickenson was called "The Ghost of the Homestead" --her birthplace and lifelong home; why she never married and how she concealed her scandalous affair for over 30 years; how Henry Longfellow was born in Massachusetts, but you need to go to Maine to see his birthplace; and why a person who detested beards would be forced to grow one in order not to frighten his children. Plus, a very short sampling of poetry from both authors.
